A study on rural females¢¥ attitudes and influence factorei toward the elderly

Abstract
This study was intendent to investigate the attitudes of rural females¢¥ toward the elderly, and to investigate any possible correlation between¢¥ these attitudes and the following variables : the rural females¢¥ of adult age levels, their physical complains of symptoms, their personal experience with elderly and Complain area of mental symP : torn the comnlaint of farmer svndrom Complaint degree about the household work, the uses of oriental and occidental medical treatment and traditional home Nursing, Their Personal experience with elderly family members, their educational experience of the elderly¢¥s health problems and geriatrie Nursing.
Therefore, the purpose of this study was to Compile basic data about the attitudes of rural females toward the elderly in order to contribute to the improvement of geriatric Nursing.
The subjects for this study were 270 rural females of adult age. Data was collected from the 6th of Jan., to the 27 th of Feb., 1989, Using the Tuckman-Lorge attitude Questionnaire, as the other instrument used in this study, the interview questionnaires developed directly by the researcher were used, and the study about the traditional home Nursing in the study contents was made with the observation suruey and the free response form of open type.
About the collected data, analysis was made with the statistical method of T-test about mean and standard deviation etc., by using the Computing system of S.P.S.S.
The results which were obtained are as follow.
1. The attitude score of rural females¢¥ was M= 73.25 and S.D=18.07(p<0.01) rural females¢¥ of adult age agreed with 56.3 % of the stereotypie statements, and they had stereotypic attitudes toward the elderly relatively.
2. There was a significant difference between the attitudes of rural females¢¥ toward the elderly, in case of the age group of 45-55 had a less stereotypic attitudes than other age group (p<0.01) .
3. As for the attitude about the elderly seen by the complaint of physical symptoms, it emerged significantly that the fixed idea ahout the elderly was high in comparison with the other field complaint, only in case there was physical symptom. Complaint about the .Urinaly systen(p<0.01), and significant difference didn¢¥t emerge is the attitude about the elderly, in the other field(p>0.05).
4. As for the attitude about the erderly seen by the complaint of mental symptoms, it emerged significantly that the fixed idea about the old was high in comparison with the other field complaint, only in case there was the complaint of psychological symptoms about the mental depression(p<0.01), and significant difference didn¢¥t emerge in the attitude about the eldeyly in the other field (00.05).
5. As for the attitude about the elderly by the complaint of farmer syndrom between 2 groups of the subjects to show the symptoms over 4 question items(65.14 %) and the subjects to show the symptoms below 2 question items (34.85 %) with 9 symptoms such as lumbago, benumbment of hand and foot, breathlessness, abdominal inflation, shoulderache, headache, dizziness, bed-wetting and insomnia etc., significant difference didn¢¥t emerge in the attitude about the old(p>0.0 5).
6. As for the attitude about the elderly by the complaint degree about the household work, significant difference didn¢¥t emerge(p)¢¥0.05) in the attitude of fixed idea about the old between 2 groups of `difficult¢¥(66 %) etc. and `very easy¢¥ and `easy¢¥(34 %).
7. As for the evaluation marks of attitude about the elderly by the. Uses of oriental and occidental medical treatment and traditional home nursing, in case of single use of oriental medical treatment, M=65.87 and S.D=14. 88, in case of the combined use of oriental medical treatment, M=71.45 and S.D=16. 27, in case of the combined use of oriental and occidental medical treatment and traditional home nursing, M=73.25 and S.D= 17.19, and in case of the combined use of oriental and occidental medical treatment, and traditional home nursing, M=74.02 and S.D= 15.21. In comparison with the item which is referred to as the combined use of occidental and oriental medical treatment and traditional home nursing, it emerged significantly that the fixed idea about the old was low( p<0.01) , and significant difference didn¢¥t emerge in other items(p(0.05).
8. As for the distribution by the experience of consultation and education about the health issue and nursing of the elderly elf study subject, experienced housewives were 21.3 % & inexperienced housewives were 79.7 %, Thus, the subjects who didn¢¥t have experience about consultation and education were occupying almost 80 %. And the attitude about the elderly by the experience of consultation and education on the health issue and nursing of the elderly is as follows :
As for the evaluation marks of attitude about the elderly the significant difference between groups by T-test didn¢¥t emerge (p>0.05), with M=70.28 and S.D=14.41, in case of the subjects who had the experience of consultation and education about the health issue and nursing of the elderly and M=70.83 and S.D=15.67, in case of the subjects who didn¢¥t have the experience(p>0.05). Thus there was not any difference in the stereotypic attitudes about the elderly.
